Hikimori Tendencies

The concept of being a hikikomori appears to be multifaceted, and I find myself resonating with hikikomori tendencies, albeit in a functional manner. While I acknowledge possessing characteristics aligning with hikikomori, a sense of incongruity arises because ongoing discussions and debates question whether an individual can be classified as a hikikomori while still engaging in online studies or work. The traditional definition of hikikomori denotes social isolation, suggesting a complete withdrawal from societal activities. However, the dichotomy arises when considering individuals who pursue education and employment in online settings, seemingly contradicting the conventional understanding of hikikomori.

My inclination veers away from venturing into the physical realm, preferring the comfort of my digital existence. Although I recognize the allure of the real world under specific circumstances, the notion of stepping outside becomes less appealing when compelled by external forces, such as parental influence. Despite exhibiting certain symptoms associated with hikikomori, there exist one or two elements in my life that deviate from the conventional archetype, prompting self-reflection on whether I can genuinely be categorized as a hikikomori.

It is not my intention to embrace the hikikomori lifestyle or grapple with additional challenges, yet the lack of a distinct classification for individuals like me fosters a sense of ambiguity. Perhaps there should exist a designation for those with hikikomori tendencies who simultaneously engage in online work and education. While I derive considerable comfort from the digital realm, it is important to acknowledge that prolonged periods in this space can have adverse effects on my mental health, a sentiment echoed by others who have shared their experiences.

Expressing a genuine desire to deepen my understanding of Japanese culture, I have created a dedicated space for conversing solely in Japanese. I contemplate delving into Japanese hikikomori websites or forums to gain a more nuanced perspective. However, I am wary of being perceived as a foreigner who romanticizes Japanese culture without genuine respect. Despite my admiration for the unique beauty of Japanese culture, my aspirations include visiting Japan for an extended period, perhaps a month or two, once I attain independence.
